Files & attachments
Drop files into a note and ask questions about them. NotesXD extracts their text locally so the AI can use them as context — your files never leave your Mac.
Adding attachments
- Drag and drop one or more files directly into a note.
- Multiple attachments stack cleanly without overlapping or breaking previous ones.
- Imported files have their text captured so it becomes part of your note's content.
Supported content
Text is extracted from a wide range of files:
- PDFs — text extracted with on-device parsing.
- Images — text read via on-device OCR.
- Documents — Word and Pages files.
- Data files — JSON, CSV and XML read as plain text.
Files as AI context
Once attached, file text is available to both text chat and voice. You can ask about a file in the open note or about files across an entire folder. Very large files are capped to keep responses fast and reliable; the assistant can read a specific note for full detail.
Extraction happens on your device. Files are stored locally and are never uploaded — only the relevant context fragments are sent to the AI to answer your question.
Older attachments
If you attached files before text extraction was available for a format, NotesXD re-indexes eligible attachments in the background so they become searchable by the AI too.
